“In 1942 everyone loved a soldier”

In Northern England during the Second World War, American army bases have gone up outside the towns, and the locals do not much care for the loud new arrivals. Matt Dyson (Richard Gere), a G.I. stationed nearby, falls for Jean Moreton (Lisa Eichhorn), a local girl, while Captain John (William Devane) and Helen (Vanessa Redgrave) find their own comfort. Schlesinger gives us the soldiers' uniforms against the grey town, a few borrowed months, and no combat anywhere.
