Niankoro (Issiaka Kane), a young man with magical powers, sets out across the land to find his uncle Bofing (Ismaila Sarr) and ask for his help against his sorcerer father. Souleymane Cissé tells it in the Bambara and Fula languages, from a legend of the Bambara people. Under the quest sits an old, plain idea: knowledge passed from one generation to the next is power, and a son has to decide what to do with what he is given.
