NJ (Wu Nien-jen), an engineer in Taipei, just wants to keep his small business afloat while the people around him keep needing him. His brother owes him money, his mother lies in a coma, and his wife Min-Min (Elaine Jin Yan-Ling) is struggling to find any meaning in her own days. Edward Yang gives each of three generations of the family a turn, and each is asking, in their own way, what any of it is for.
