In 1956 Britain, Mary Price Hilton (Diana Dors) waits in the condemned cell of a women's prison, watched round the clock by Matron Hilda MacFarlane (Yvonne Mitchell) and the wardresses. She has been convicted of murder, and in the long hours she goes back over the events that put her there, including her relationship with Jim Lancaster (Michael Craig). J. Lee Thompson keeps the camera inside the prison walls, close on Dors's face.
