“Kill one or a hundred... you only hang once”

A masterless samurai (Toshirō Mifune) wanders into a feudal village, gives his name as Sanjuro Kuwabatake, and sees a way to profit from the quarrel between two rival gambling bosses. He hires himself out as bodyguard to both the silk merchant Tazaemon and the sake merchant Tokuemon. Akira Kurosawa frames the dusty main street like a stage and lets the camera hold still while the men around it move.
