You Can't Cheat an Honest Man

(1939)Directed by Edward F. Cline, George Marshall76 minComedy
“AT LAST YOU CAN SEE THESE FAMOUS FEUDSTERS CLASH ON THE SCREEN!”

The carnival never stays in one town long, and nobody on the lot can say how Larson E. Whipsnade (W.C. Fields) keeps ahead of the law and the foreclosure notices. His performers go unpaid, including the ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his dummy Charlie McCarthy, who tries to pry money out of him and sometimes just takes it. George Marshall and Edward F. Cline build the picture on that one idea: a con man works hardest at swindling his own staff.
