“Everyone gets old. Not everyone grows up.”

Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron), a divorced writer, drives back from Minneapolis to the small Midwestern town where she grew up. Her old boyfriend Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson) is married with a new baby, and Mavis has decided he belongs to her. Jason Reitman follows her through the bars and living rooms of home, where Matt Freehauf (Patton Oswalt) is the one person who sees what she is up to, and a family stands in her way.
