Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) is an American surgeon trying to live down his family name when he inherits his grandfather's castle in Transylvania. He finds his ancestor's notes and decides to build a creature of his own with the help of the hunchbacked Igor (Marty Feldman). Mel Brooks shoots the whole thing in black and white, treating the mad-scientist machinery and the monster's stumbling first steps with the same deadpan care.
