Young Man with a Horn

(1950)Directed by Michael Curtiz112 minDrama, Music, Romance
“Put down your trumpet, jazzman. I'm in the mood for love!”

In 1950 America, Rick Martin (Kirk Douglas) grows up an orphan, taken in by the musicians around him, and he wants to play pure jazz while the paying gigs are all commercial. Michael Curtiz follows him into a marriage to the aloof, tempestuous heiress Amy North (Lauren Bacall), with Jo Jordan (Doris Day) singing nearby. Rick keeps his horn close, and the pure note he is after stays just out of reach.
