Young Törless

At an Austrian boarding school in the early 1900s, the shy, watchful Thomas Törleß (Mathieu Carrière) sits among boys who are drawing a classmate into their cruelty. Anselm von Basini (Marian Seidowsky) becomes their victim, and Törleß watches without lifting a hand. Volker Schlöndorff, making his first feature from Robert Musil's novel, keeps the camera close and quiet, so the room never lets you look away.
