“18 kids, one house, no way.”

New London is where Admiral Frank Beardsley (Dennis Quaid) arrives to take over the Coast Guard Academy, a widower with eight children who run on charts and salutes. At a high school reunion he meets Helen North (Rene Russo) again, a designer with ten children and a house of loving chaos, and they marry almost on the spot. Raja Gosnell puts both families under one roof and lets the two ways of living collide.
