In a future where overpopulation has pushed the world government to ban childbirth for thirty years, couples are handed robot babies to raise instead. Russ (Oliver Reed) and Carol (Geraldine Chaplin) take theirs home and cannot bring themselves to love it. Michael Campus fills the film with sealed sets, bleak and close, and Carol decides she will have a real child, whatever the law does to her.
