In Denmark in 1961, Bjørn (Adam Tønsberg), a middle-class boy in his early teens, wants Steen (Peter Reichhardt) to accept him. Steen bullies his classmates and lives with wealthy parents who are freezingly cold, while Bjørn's other friend Mulle (Morten Hoff) is cheerful, working-class and more childish. Bille August watches Steen push Mulle away and pull Bjørn toward more violence, the two boys on one side and Mulle alone on the other.
