A Moscow engineer, Alexey Varakin (Leonid Filatov), steps off the train in a small provincial town, sent there on a business trip to a factory. Karen Shakhnazarov puts him in front of a naked secretary no one in the office will look at, a prosecutor (Vladimir Menshov) eager to commit a crime, and a writers' union chairman who greets it all as ordinary. Varakin keeps asking the polite questions of a man with a return ticket, and nobody here answers them.
