The Blood Demon is already wrecking the Zu mountains, and Ti (Yuen Biao), a young scout in the civil wars of fifth-century western China, falls into its path by jumping through a crevice to escape the fighting. On the other side, Tsui Hark fills the frame with swordsmen, spirits and a supernatural battle. Ti is pulled between the warrior Ding Yin (Adam Cheng Siu-Chow) and the Ice Queen (Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia), each asking him to trust them.
