Zvenigora

An old man tells his grandson about a treasure buried beneath the hills of Zvenigora. Alexander Dovzhenko follows that story into Ukrainian folklore, ancient history and revolution, with Timoshka (Semyon Svashenko) and Pavel (Les Podorozhniy) as the two grandsons. Cut together in quick, dreamlike bursts, the film shows a country's past and its present living side by side, as if one could hardly be told from the other.
